Vapes & Concentrates: Carts, Rosin & "Full-Spectrum"
A field guide to the oil in your cartridge — what the words on the label actually promise, and what they quietly leave out.

There is a version of the concentrate aisle that looks like a wall of interchangeable cartridges, all glowing amber, all promising the same fruity strain names. And there is the real version, in which those cartridges represent three fundamentally different manufacturing philosophies — three chairs at the same table, each with its own tradeoffs. Learning to tell them apart is the one thing worth learning first. The oil is not the oil is not the oil.
Nothing here is medical advice. This is about reading a label like someone who knows what the words cost to produce.
The three chairs: distillate, live resin, rosin
Start with distillate. This is cannabis oil stripped down to near-pure THC — often 90 percent and up — by a process that boils off almost everything else, including the aromatic terpenes that give a plant its character. What you get is potent, cheap to produce, shelf-stable, and essentially flavorless on its own. That last part matters, because a flavorless oil has to get its flavor from somewhere. We'll come back to that.
Next, live resin. Here the plant is flash-frozen at harvest rather than dried and cured, then run through a hydrocarbon solvent (typically butane or propane) that pulls out cannabinoids and the volatile terpenes together. The solvent is then purged off. The result is a fuller, more plant-true profile than distillate — the strain actually tastes like itself — while still using a chemical solvent to do the extracting. "Live" refers to the frozen-fresh starting material, not to anything alive in the jar.
The third chair is rosin, and specifically live rosin or hash rosin. This is the one the enthusiast wing of the market has spent the last few years falling in love with. Rosin is made with nothing but ice water, agitation, heat, and pressure — no solvent at any step. Fresh-frozen flower is washed in ice water to knock loose the resin heads, that hash is dried, and then it's pressed under gentle heat until the oil weeps out. Lower yield, higher cost, more labor, more that can go wrong. In exchange, you get arguably the most complete expression of the plant available in a cartridge.
"Solventless" and "full-spectrum" — what they actually claim
Two words do a lot of marketing work here, and they don't mean the same thing.
Solventless is a process claim. It means no added chemical solvent touched the oil — the mechanical ice-water-and-pressure route. Rosin is solventless. Live resin and distillate are not (they use hydrocarbon solvents that are later purged). Note the trap: "solventless" and "solvent-free" sound identical but aren't. A properly purged hydrocarbon product is "solvent-free" in the sense that residual solvent is tested below action limits — but it is not solventless, because a solvent did the work. Reputable operators keep those words straight. Marketing copy sometimes doesn't.
Full-spectrum is a composition claim — a promise that the cannabinoids and terpenes from the original plant are largely preserved together, rather than isolated and recombined. The appeal rests on the entourage idea: the notion that the plant's compounds may interact, and that the whole reads differently than pure THC alone. Worth saying plainly — this is a widely reported consumer experience and an active area of study, not settled science, and we're making no health claim about it. But it explains a persistent piece of feedback: people routinely describe an 80-percent live rosin as feeling more substantial than a 95-percent distillate, despite the lower number. The market has noticed. Industry write-ups this year describe a meaningful consumer migration toward solventless formats, particularly among buyers who've decided the THC percentage on the label is the least interesting number on it.
The terpene question — where the flavor really comes from
Here is the mechanism that separates an informed buyer from a confused one.
Because distillate is stripped of its own terpenes, flavor has to be added back. There are two ways to do it. Cannabis-derived terpenes are aromatic compounds reclaimed from cannabis itself — truer to the plant, scarcer, more expensive. Botanical terpenes are the same named molecules (limonene, myrcene, and so on) sourced from other plants like citrus or hops, then blended to approximate a strain's profile. Botanicals are cheaper and can be mixed to spec; purists find they read slightly "off," a flavor-packet version of the real thing. Neither is illegitimate. They're a cost-and-fidelity tradeoff, and a cartridge that lists its terpene source is doing you a courtesy that many don't.
The caution worth internalizing is about added or sprayed terpenes more broadly. When terpenes are reintroduced into a stripped oil, the ratio matters — and there's a floor below which a cart won't flow and above which it turns harsh and thin-tasting. An oil that's been over-cut to hit a price or a viscosity can carry a terpene load that has more to do with manufacturing convenience than with any plant. This is not an accusation against any particular brand; it's a description of an incentive that exists whenever flavor is an ingredient rather than an inheritance. The tell is on the label: solventless rosin carts don't spray terpenes back in, because they never took them out. Distillate carts, by definition, add something. Knowing which you're holding tells you which questions to ask.
Heat, and why harshness is often a temperature problem
One last variable the label won't mention: how you're vaporizing it. Terpenes and cannabinoids each have their own boiling points, and running a cart hot — a high-voltage battery, a long hard pull — pushes past the gentle range where the aromatics live and into territory that tastes acrid and scratches the throat. A lot of "this cart is harsh" is really "this battery is set too high." Lower voltage, shorter draws, and letting the hardware rest between pulls will flatter almost any oil, and will especially reward the expensive solventless one you paid up for. Cooking a live rosin cart at maximum heat is like searing a delicate fish over a blowtorch.
None of these three chairs is the "right" one. Distillate delivers potent, consistent, affordable, neutral. Live resin offers real plant character at a friendlier price than rosin. Solventless rosin is the connoisseur's pour, at a connoisseur's price and a connoisseur's fragility. The point of literacy isn't to crown a winner — it's to make sure the words on the label and the oil in the glass are telling you the same story. When they diverge, that's the only thing worth being a snob about.
