Walk any dispensary floor and you will watch the same ritual repeat itself. A customer flips the jar, finds the one number printed largest, and sorts the entire wall by it. Thirty-two percent beats twenty-six. Twenty-six beats twenty-two. The transaction is settled before anyone has opened a lid or leaned in for a smell. It is the most efficient way to shop and one of the least reliable, because that single figure — the headline THC percentage — is simultaneously the number consumers trust most and the number the supply chain has the most incentive, and the most opportunity, to nudge upward.
There is a better line on the label. It is usually smaller, sometimes absent, and it goes by a few names: total cannabinoids, total active cannabinoids, TAC. It is not a magic bullet, and it is not the crown. But as a supporting metric it is sturdier than the THC figure it sits beneath, and understanding why is the first step out of the potency trap.
What the big number actually measures
THC percentage is a snapshot of one molecule's share of a flower's weight. The trouble is that a single molecule is easy to isolate and, therefore, easy to flatter. A 2023 study in PLOS One pointedly titled "Uncomfortably high" found retail labels routinely overstating THC, and the pattern has held up. A Colorado analysis reported in late 2025 found that roughly 44 percent of flower products failed label-accuracy standards, most of them inflated rather than understated. The mechanisms are well documented and worth naming plainly: potency is a selling feature, labs compete for the growers who pay them, and a testing house that returns generous numbers wins repeat business. No single villain is required. When one variable is both the basis of the sale and the basis of the lab's next contract, that variable drifts.
None of this means the flower is fake. It means the one number you are anchoring on is the softest number in the room.
Why the total is harder to game
Total cannabinoids adds up everything the plant is actually producing — THC alongside CBD, CBG, CBN, THCV, CBC, and the trace minor cannabinoids that rarely earn their own line. This matters for two reasons.
The first is arithmetic. Inflating one number in isolation is trivial; inflating a coherent profile across half a dozen correlated compounds is much harder to do without leaving fingerprints. A THC figure can float free of botanical reality. A full cannabinoid panel has to hang together, and internal inconsistency is exactly what auditors look for.
The second is information. The same Colorado work found that while most products dutifully listed CBD, only about 16 percent reported anything about the other cannabinoids — and that CBG, quietly, was often more abundant than CBD across the products tested. A jar reporting THC and nothing else is not just less trustworthy; it is less revealing. A flower carrying meaningful CBG, a whisper of THCV, or the CBN that accrues as material ages is telling you something about its genetics, its freshness, and its likely character that the THC line alone cannot.
The entourage, without the mysticism
This is where the word entourage enters, and it deserves a sober framing. The entourage effect is the proposition that cannabinoids and terpenes act together, and that the whole behaves differently than any isolated part. It is an intuitive idea with genuinely mixed evidence behind it. Some research points to terpenes modulating a cannabinoid's activity; a frequently cited 2020 review argued the term is often "unfounded and used mainly for marketing." Honest position: the entourage is a useful lens and a plausible mechanism, not a settled law. Treat anyone selling it as proven with the same skepticism you would bring to a 34-percent flower.
What is not in dispute is directional. A plant is a chord, not a single note, and the total-cannabinoid line — read alongside the terpene panel — gets you closer to hearing the chord than the loudest note ever will. That is the entire case for the metric, and it is a modest one. Nothing here is medical advice; we are talking about how to read a label, not how anything will make you feel.
Where it sits in the hierarchy
Keep the ranking straight, because this is where shoppers overcorrect. Total cannabinoids is a better number than THC. It is not the deciding factor. The nose leads — always. Aroma and the terpene profile are the closest legal proxy for how a flower will actually smoke and how it was grown, and they are far harder to fake in the jar than any figure on a sticker. Cure, structure, trichome integrity, and how the trim was handled will shape your experience more than a two-point swing in any cannabinoid reading.
So the working order is roughly this. Smell first. Read the terpenes. Then, when you want a chemical second opinion, look for total cannabinoids rather than the headline THC — and treat a jar that reports the full panel as quietly more credible than one that shouts a single big number and stays silent on everything else. A grower who publishes the whole profile is making a harder promise, which is exactly why it is worth more.
The through-line of this whole subject is trust, and trust follows verifiability. The THC percentage became king because it is simple, and it stayed king because it is easy to inflate and hard to check. Total cannabinoids will not dethrone it on the strength of one article. But it hands you a sturdier, more honest signal — and in a market where the loudest number is the softest, learning to read the quieter ones is the closest thing to an edge you get.
