There is a comforting fiction on every menu in America: that a strain name is a promise. That "Wedding Cake" is a fixed thing, a barcode you can trust from shelf to shelf and coast to coast. It is not. A strain name is closer to a family surname — it tells you something about lineage, and almost nothing about the individual in front of you. Understanding why requires walking the chain back to its origin, before the trim room, before the cure, before the grow. It starts at the seed. And it never really stops moving.
The Hunt
When breeders talk about "pheno-hunting," they are describing the least glamorous, most expensive R&D in the plant world. A single cannabis seed is a genetic coin-flip: cross two parents and every seed in the pack expresses that lineage a little differently — a different terpene lean, a different structure, a different high. The keeper you are chasing might be one plant in a hundred. Or one in a thousand.
That is not a figure of speech. In one account of their process, the Jungle Boys team described sourcing "anywhere from 250 to 1,000 seeds" for a normal hunt and popping all of them, then narrowing the survivors down to six, then four, then a handful of true keepers — a project that runs a year to two years across multiple grow cycles, because a plant often needs three full runs before it reveals what it actually is. Their Mimosa hunt reportedly started with 200 seeds and surrendered only a dozen worth keeping. Seed Junky Genetics — the breeder behind the Wedding Cake and Jealousy lines that have anchored menus for years — built a reputation on exactly this kind of patience, selecting and stabilizing standout cuts until a phenotype was worth its name.
This is the part of the supply chain that never appears on a label. When a shop's Wedding Cake tastes like the platonic version — dense, tangy, unmistakable — you are tasting a decision someone made years earlier, in a room full of plants that mostly got culled. The hunt is real work, real capital, and real risk. It is also, in our view, the most honest argument against pay-to-play menus: no marketing budget substitutes for the grower who actually did the sorting. The keeper cut is earned, not bought.
Same Name, Different Plant
Here is where the promise breaks. Once a breeder finds a keeper, that plant gets propagated by cloning — snipping cuttings that are, genetically, exact copies of the mother. In theory, a clone is immortal and unchanging. In practice, growers have argued for decades about "clone degradation": the sense that a beloved cut loses vigor, yield, or potency as it gets passed hand to hand and run to run over the years.
The science here is genuinely contested, and worth stating carefully. A clone is a genetic replica; it does not accumulate new DNA errors just by being cut. What does shift is everything around the DNA. Epigenetics — the environmental switches that turn genes up or down without rewriting them — appears to be the larger story: nutrition, light, pathogen load, and the age and health of the mother all leave marks. Cuttings carry stress and viral hitchhikers forward. Clones lack the taproot a seed plant builds, changing how they feed. Over time, a cut that is passed around carelessly can simply express itself worse than the one the breeder first selected. Reasonable growers still disagree about how much of this is "drift" versus plain poor keeping — so treat the mechanism as real and the magnitude as debated.
Whichever way the argument lands, the practical consequence is the same, and it is the point of this piece: the same strain name will differ by grower and by year. It is a plant, not a print run. A cut of Jealousy that one operation has kept clean and vigorous is not the cut a competitor has been beating up for six years. The 2024 batch is not the 2026 batch. A name gets you to the neighborhood. The batch is the address.
The Emerging Fix
The most interesting development in this whole conversation is technical: tissue culture. Instead of maintaining a mother plant that ages and collects viruses in a grow room, cultivators can propagate genetics from tiny bits of plant material in a sterile lab, and — through a process called meristem culture — effectively clean pathogens out of a cut and bank it in a stable, near-frozen state. The pitch is preservation: keep the keeper as the keeper, indefinitely, without the slow erosion of years of rough cloning.
It is not magic, and it is not everywhere. Tissue culture is capital-intensive, still maturing as commercial practice, and no substitute for the hunt that finds the genetics in the first place. But it points at a future where "clone degradation" becomes a solved problem for operators who invest in it — and where the gap widens between growers who steward their genetics and those who don't. That gap, more than any name on a label, is what you are actually paying for.
None of this is a knock on any specific brand or shop; every operation makes tradeoffs between cost, scale, and how much they baby their cuts. The takeaway is not suspicion — it is literacy. When two jars of the "same" strain disagree, they are usually both telling the truth. They are just different plants, hunted or kept by different hands, in a different year. Trust the batch in front of you, not the promise printed above it.
